Today, looking at a photoset I was reminded of one of my longstanding bugbears in regards to Spike’s characterisation.
He’s a Manchester United fan.
While Spike meets the sole qualififcation for being a Man Utd fan (he’s from anywhere other than Manchester) and I understand why Whedon chose that club as Americans are likely to have at least heard of Man Utd, I don’t buy it.
Spike spent a lot of time and effort creating his persona of a working class, anarchist punk brawler who lives for the moment. I just don’t see him being a supporter of a club that is more of a global brand than a football team*. Plus, he’s a Londoner and I think he’s much more likely to support one of the dozen local teams.
Personally I think he’s much more likely to support either West Ham, Fulham or Millwall.
*For example he’s definitely one of those fans who complains about foreign billionaires buying up British Football teams and trying to buy their way to Championship gold.
